It is refreshing to hear the gospel being preached in an unvarnished fashion. I am leaving behind a denomination that leaned far to the legalistic side. They paid lip service to salvation by grace but many of them got around it by saying you had to make Jesus your Lord... which was code for "work your way to salvation."

Thanks for keeping the gospel simple even if it is risky.

Hi Clay...what a great thought-provoking entry. I vividly remember thinking (before salvation) that Christians had the ultimate "out" since God would always forgive them for their bad behaviors. How incredibly wrong I was about God's grace. When I accepted Jesus I soon realized that I would never want to purposely sin because it would grieve Him so very much. So, yes, He forgives me but He also has given His grace so that I am convicted when I sin and want to depend more and more on Him. Thanks for always keeping the gospel the "main thing".

The title to this post of yours reminded me of a sermon we just had last week and in the same chapter where Paul talks about his thorn in the flesh, he also goes into talking about "I know a man in Christ"...my understanding is that he was talking about himself but referred to himself in 3rd person...something like that man was greater than he. Anyway, the teaching at church from this was that we should fully integrate with this "grace man" and be able to say "I know a man in Christ, and that man is me"

Face book is a way in which people who are "homebound" can stay in touch with others. There are many sick, lonely, depressed, stressed, and oppressed people that finally have a way to communitcate. Face time is always better, but not always an option.

hi clay, thanks for writing about my facebook article! i've since included it in my new book The Peep Diaries: How We're Learning to Love Watching Ourselves and Our Neighbors. the book is mostly about what happens when we privilege virtual life/connection over flesh life. check it out, be curious to read your take on it. as for needing a church family, you are right in the sense that only real relationships that have their primary roots in some kind of in person community are likely to really last/matter. best, hal.

Thanks for giving your readers the background and text of "Sweet Hour of Prayer"--including that second stanza, that is often omitted. Many Christians, myself included, do not value and utilize the place of prayer as we should.
